- The boy’s rich costume lends an aura of refinement to the portrait, recalling the elegance of Van Dyck (q.v.) and of Van Noordt’s Flemish contemporaries such as Gonzales Coques (q.v.), while his occupation suggests the privileged status of the huntsman. Following the extension of hunting rights, which had been an exclusive privilege of the aristocracy, it became common for the wealthy Dutch middle classes to have themselves depicted enjoying this new privilege.
