  • A typical example of Raoux’s decorative intimate style, exhibiting his characteristic chiarascuro and soft handling of drapery. It is one of a number of versions of a late composition (others include 1723, Aix, Musée Granet; and 1729, London, P. Larsen 1967), with a model who recurs in several genre pictures by the artist. The 4th Marquess of Hertford described this picture to his agent Samuel Mawson with typical insouciance: ‘a little insignificant 40£ head, pretty but of no importance’.
