  • Murillo was renowned for his tender evocations of the relationship of the Virgin and Child, a subject well-suited to his expressive, sentimental style. The oval format, which increases the air of intimacy, is unusual in Murillo’s work and may have been inspired by the example of Raphael’s circular Madonna della Sedia (Florence, Pitti Palace).
