- Van der Heyden was the most accomplished townscape painter of seventeenth-century Holland. An inventor as well as a painter, he died a wealthy man, with a fine picture collection. His command of perspective and clarity of detail, particularly seen in the rendering of brickwork, were probably achieved with the aid of optical devices. Exterior of a Church shows a fanciful view of an unidentified church probably based upon the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam. The figures are attributed to Adriaen van de Velde.
