- A brace of partridge is seen in the centre of the composition, with a brace of sanderling above, on the ledge, and a dead kingfisher in the foreground. There are several similar compositions be Hondecoeter, including pictures in museums in Toledo (Ohio), The Hague and Utecht. This painting dates from mid 1660s when his work reflected influence of Jan Weenix. It was atttributed to Jan Weenix when acquired by the 4th Marquess of Hertford, and to Jan Baptist Weenix when exhibited in 1872-5.
