- A Gallant Conversation may be dated soon after Pater's reception piece of 1728, Soldiers Celebrating (Paris, Louvre), as the foreground couple were also used in the latter work. The embracing couple in the mid-ground left is a crude reworking of the couple seen in Watteau’s Le Faux Pas (Paris, Louvre); the motif was re-used by Pater on a number of occasions.
