- Copied from two of the series of twelve views of the Grand Canal painted by Canaletto c.1728-c.1734 for Consul Smith, engraved by Visentini in 1735, and sold by Smith to George III c.1762 (Royal Collection). It appears to have been copied from the pictures rather than Visentini’s plates, as the colours are closely imitated, and so were probably painted before the originals left Italy (cf. After Canaletto P512 and P515). For a similar view, see Canaletto P510.
