Born in Marshfield, near Bath, older brother of the essayist William Hazlitt; visited America with his parents 1783 – 1786 where he began painting portraits. On his return studied with Reynolds, and exhibited at the RA from 1788 to 1819. He worked in Bury between the 1799 and 1814, and retired in 1832 to Stockport where he died. Many of his works are in the Maidstone Museum.
