Born in London, he was first taught miniature painting by his father, William Ross, and subsequently was an assistant to Andrew Robertson whose ambition to emulate the force of oils in miniature painting influences his style. He was the leading miniaturist of the Victorian age, becoming the miniature painter to Queen Victoria in 1837, and being knighted in 1842, the year he was elected RA.
