Works of Art

Born in Strasbourg, he was a pupil of the pastellist Huin. He moved to Paris in 1785 where he was much influenced by the recently published Roman frescoes from Herculaneum and Pompeii. After a period of exile from Paris during the Revolution, he returned at the beginning of the Consulate and became a member of Isabey’s studio, a step which influenced his later style. He moved to Obernay, Alsace, in 1821 and died there.
