Born in Riga; after serving in the Swedish army, he transferred in 1677 to the French army. In 1690 he gave up his military career and practised as a miniature painter in Paris. He was known in France as Clinchetet. He specialised in painting small figurative compositions, often of a gallant nature, for snuff-boxes; Cardinal Dubois called him Le Raphael des tabatières (Raphael of the snuffboxes). He died in Paris in poverty.
