Giovanni Battista Cima da Conegliano (1459 - 1517)
  • Place of Birth: Conegliano, Italy
  • Place of Death: Conegliano or Venice, Italy
Works of Art

Born in Conegliano where he is first documented in 1475 aged fourteen. He probably first studied there, but he was in Venice by 1486 where Giovanni Bellini and, to a lesser extent, Antonello da Messina greatly influenced his style which changed little subsequently. His first dated altarpiece, for the church of S. Bartolomeo, Vicenza, is of 1489, and his work continued to be devotional in character; some thirty of his altarpieces survive, the commissions equally divided between Venice and the Venetian terraferma.

Most of his working life was spent in Venice, though he returned frequently to Conegliano where he was buried on 3 September, probably in 1517; he was certainly dead by November 1518.
