Works of Art

Baptised on 2 June 1621 in Haarlem, where he is said to have studied under his brother Adriaen. His first dated painting is from 1639 and he joined the Haarlem guild in 1643. His early low-life interiors closely followed his brother's work, but he subsequently developed a distinctive manner of his own, specialising in outdoor genre scenes of peasant life and winter pieces, combining a special sense of landscape with a lively interest in people.

His early death occurred in Haarlem, where he was buried on 16 October 1649.
