Born on 15 April 1682 in Amsterdam, where he studied with his father, Justus van Huysum the elder (1659-1716), also a flower painter. He practised all his life in Amsterdam as a flower painter (and occasional landscapist), and there are dated works from 1706. He died in Amsterdam on 8 February 1749. Although his reputation was considerable, he accepted only one pupil, Margaretha Haverman.
Amongst his many imitators were his younger brother Jacobus (c. 1687-1740?) and, from a later generation,
Jan van Os (1744-1808) and his son, Georgius Jacobus Johannes (1782-1861).
