Works of Art

Son of the celebrated miniaturist Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1855), with whom he first studied, though he soon showed his independence as a landscapist in oils and watercolours influenced by Delacroix and Bonington.

At first known principally for his paintings and lithographs of coastal views (particularly in Normandy), under the July Monarchy he also developed into a painter of anecdotal genre scenes, both contemporary and historical. For Louis-Philippe he produced several large-scale paintings of official occasions, including The Return of the Ashes of Napoleon (1842; Versailles).
