Works of Art

A pupil of Horace Vernet, Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824) and Gros, in the early 1820s he travelled through Europe, particularly Italy and Holland, at first as drawing master to an English family. His exhibits at the Paris Salon between 1824 and 1867, notably scenes from early modern history (in which a distaste for religious intolerance is sometimes apparent) won him a considerable reputation.

His official commissions included portraits and history pictures for Versailles and the decoration of the Tribunal de Commerce in Paris. He had brief and unhappy spells as Director of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts (appointed 1863) and as Director of the French Academy in Rome (1866-7).
