A pupil of Anne-Louis Girodet (1767-1824) and Gros, in the late 1820s he became the leading French painter of marine subjects, particularly sea battles. Louis-Philippe commissioned him to paint for Versailles 97 scenes illustrating the achievements of the French navy, and among his many other commissions was a series of ports of Russia ordered by Nicholas I. In 1844 he married Margaret Hay, grand-daughter of the 7th Marquess of Tweeddale. He was created a baron by Louis-Philippe.
