Works of Art

A consummate draughtsman as well as a painter, chiefly of historical subjects and portraits. The son of a painter, he was a pupil of Jacques-Louis David (1748-1825), winning the prix de Rome in 1801. He was in Rome 1806-20, Florence 1820-4 and Rome again, as Director of the French Academy, 1835-41.

Although his art was deeply personal and he possessed a passionate, even neurotic, temperament, he was a zealous defender of the classical tradition and its doctrine of the supremacy of intellectual line over emotional colour.
