- Bookmarkable URLA preparatory study for the Virgin of Mercy, commissioned from Maratta in 1656 by the Confradia del Gonfalón for their church of Santa Eulalia in Palma, Majorca. A relatively early work, the composition reveals the influence of Maratta’s teacher Andrea Sacchi. The drawing also provides interesting evidence of the increasing interest in the connoisseurship and collecting of drawings at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The inscription is written in the hand of the eminent eighteenth-century collector, Pierre Crozat. It states that the drawing was given to Crozat by another famous collector, Prince Livio Odescalchi, who had himself purchased the collection of the art loving Queen Christina of Sweden.
