Polidoro Caldara, born in Caravaggio, Lombardy. From c. 1517 he was one of Raphael's assistants in the Vatican Logge. Subsequently, in collaboration with the Florentine, Maturino (d.1528), he painted many grisaille friezes on the façades of buildings in Rome, displaying a great knowledge of antiquity.

After the Sack of Rome in 1527, he worked in Naples and Messina where, it is said, he was murdered by his servant on the eve of his departure for Rome.
