  • Combed morion having a low, rounded skull with high comb heavily roped (and much damaged), the base bordered with a row of brass rosette-headed rivets for the lining strap (a restoration); there is no plume-holder; sloping brim, the ends a slight upward curve, the edge turned under and roped. The surface with a large circular panel on either side containing representations of Salome receiving the head of St. John the Baptist, and Mucius Scaevola, surrounded by scrolled foliage on a rough, granular ground; the brim incised with an engrailed ornament.
The etching is in the earlier Italian tradition, though on a granular ground, and the form of the helmet is not far removed from the Spanish cabacete. Compare the portions of an armour, Wallace Collection A53, and various armours at Valetta, Malta. For the crudity of the etched faces, compare also the Wallace Collection breastplate A1083.
