- Horse muzzle, composed of a steel framework, ornamented with pierced panels and chiselled bars. At the top is an openwork band of inscription in Roman letters:
WEN GOT WIL SO IST MI ZIL
(‘Wenn Gott will, so ist mein Zeil’; 'As God wills, so is my aim')
Immediately below is an applied panel pierced with the Imperial crowned eagle and the date 1561; the panel is supported by two lizards chiselled in the round. The circular openwork panel which forms the bottom of the muzzle bears, in openwork lettering, the inscription:
PERNHART BAWAR
‘Bernhart Bauer’ was apparently the owner's name (see also A453). Two chevron-like bars at the back. A third chevron-like bar at the back is now missing.
A comparable muzzle, dated 1567, perhaps from the same workshop, was in the collection of Frédéric Spitzer (1892 cat., VI, no. 505, illus.).
