  • Primer, of gilt bronze, flat and circular in form, the front cast in relief with a representation of Mucius Scaevola before King Porsenna, within a circular wreath; the back engraved with arabesques with a blank shield in the centre; funnel with spring-cap is engraved with short vertical lines and dots; two rings for suspension. The edge is decorated with a stamped design of two frets.

    The primer A1296 is embossed with the same composition.

    A brass dish with the same design was in the possession of Mr. Pestalozzi at Zürich.

    An identical flask inscribed on the back 'MADRID MDLV', sold at Fischer's, Lucern, 23 June 1965, lot 101, repr. in cat., was bought by C. O. von Kienbusch (A. Reinhard, letter of 26 January 1966). An identical primer was in the collection of Alfred Walcher, Ritter von Molthein, Vienna, sold H. Helbing, Munich, 17-18 May 1926, lot 236, pl. 17. A comparable primer, but decorated with a different scene, was in the Sammlung Lanna, Lepke, Berlin, 21-28 March 1911, no.1239, pl. 26.
