  • The shield is a variation on the Medici coat-ofarms and the lion is related to the ‘marzocco’ – the lion which is the symbol of Florence. Montelupo, only 12 miles from Florence, where this figure was made, is noted for its ceramic production, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries.
