  • The name 'Sylvia' refers to the wood behind the sitter. Lady Anne was the elder sister of Lady Gertrude Fitzpatrick, who was painted by Reynolds in 1779-80; a miniature copy in enamel by Bone of this portrait is also in the Wallace Collection (M20). Both miniatures may have been acquired by the 3rd Marquess of Hertford for their quality as works of art, but perhaps a friendship between the Hertford and Upper Ossory families explains their presence in the 3rd Marquess's collection.
