  • Oval-backed armchair in the Louis XVI style of carved and gilt birchwood, upholstered with fixed back, seat and armpads covered with floral tapestry with a green ground. The back is carved with a scale pattern and surmounted by a bow. The design of the tapestry on the back is a basket of roses and other flowers suspended from a wreath of bay leaves and on the seat is a spray of roses, lilac, and other flowers also enclosed by a similar wreath.
The canvas lining of the seat bears the stencil mark of 'JEANSELME', which dates the present upholstery to 1840-53 when Joseph-Pierre-François Jeanselme (d. 1860) ran the family business on his own. The mechanical carving of the chair frame and the fact that it does not appear to have borne any other upholstery suggest that it was aslo mady by Jeanselme at the same time.
