  • The chimney-piece was probably installed in the Billiard Room of Hertford House, where it still is, during the refurbishment work carried out by Sir Richard Wallace between 1872 and 1875, before he and his wife moved in. Its style, however, is reminiscent of later French seventeenth-century chimney-pieces, but incorporating gilt-bronze mounts that were popular in the Louis XVI period. It is likely to have been made in Paris shortly before its installation in London and brought back to England by the Wallaces.
