  • The box is set with six panels of piqué, a decorative technique that uses tiny gold pins set into turtleshell. Here red, yellow and white gold (or possibly silver) have been used, and are framed by gold cagework incorporating neo-classical decoration. The three-colour gold piqué is of exceptional quality and presumably dates from the early eighteenth century when the technique was more common, perhaps taken from a larger box. The hunting dog on the cover, perhaps a Dalmation, is particularly well portrayed with its spots picked out in either white gold or silver.
