  • Although first owned by the 3rd Marquess of Hertford who would have known the sitter personally, this miniature shows a figure who would also have been of particular interest to his son, the 4th Marquess, who had a military career early in his life. Frederick was commander-in-chief of the British army 1798-1809, 1811-27 - he is often regarded as the 'Grand Old Duke of York' of the nursery rhyme.
