  • Lawrence's painting on which this miniature is based has been on long-term loan to the Wallace Collection since 1993. It was clearly intended by Lawrence or his patron as a modest response to the full-length of George IV which Lawrence had painted in 1822, now in the Wallace Collection (P559). The 3rd Marquess, as Earl of Yarmouth, had been a close friend of the George, acting on occasions as his agent for the purchase of works of art. Bone's preparatory drawing for this miniature (now London, National Portrait Gallery) does not carry an inscription which would tell us whether the enamel was painted on speculation or as a commission.
