- Philip IV (1605–65) succeeded as King of Spain in 1621 and became Velázquez’s chief patron from 1623. This picture is copied from Velázquez’s portrait of the king, painted as part of a series of equestrian portraits glorifying the Hapsburg dynasty for the Salón de Reinos in the Buen Retiro palace, c.1635-6 (now Madrid, Prado). Pendant to P109. The two pictures have apparently always been pendants and were probably copied after the originals had been brought together by Charles III of Spain in 1769.
