  • A sunrise over the Maas with the Groote Kerk, Dordrecht, seen from the south-west and a passage boat on the left flying Dutch flags from the mast and the States General flag (a golden lion on a red shield) at the stern. In the nineteenth century Dr Waagen thought the work a masterpiece, and found it ‘of the sunniest transparency, the reflections in the water marvellous, the colouring powerful, and the execution marrowy’. Although the view and boats recur in other works by Cuyp, the quality of the painting is too low for it to be considered autograph. It is probably a late work painted in the manner of the master.
