  • The dangerous political situation in the northern Netherlands, following the French invasion in 1672, probably prompted him and his father to flee with his father to England in the winter of 1672-3. Here Charles II provided the Van de Veldes with a house in Greenwich, and allowed them to use the Queen’s House (where the best collection of Van de Velde paintings can be seen to this day) as a studio and provided them with a salary of £100 each. Calm: Fishing Boats under Sail depicts a fishing buss, a solidly built vessel designed for fishing herring, on the right with a kaag, a cargo vessel, in the left foreground.
