  • Van der Neer excelled in depicting meteorological conditions. The luminous effects of sunset, dawn, moon and firelight create a sense of space and atmosphere in even his smallest landscapes. A Winter Scene is one of Van der Neer’s most accomplished evocations of wintry light, one of several scenes in which the artist depicts falling snow. Flickering dabs of white paint highlight the branches of trees, lightly powder the shoulders of some of the figures and lie scattered on the rough ground.
