  • Potter here combines animal painting with a genre scene. A couple avoids the glare of the sun by sitting in the patch of the shade afforded by the sheep shelter. Their figures are squat and coarse, and their scale is disproportionately large. However, the picture convincingly reflects Potter’s fascination with different qualities of light. It was acquired by the 4th Marquess of Hertford in 1865 for the considerable sum of 41,400 francs (about £1,656) at the Paris sale of Baron Groote Lindt.
