  • Paintings of travellers gathering at an inn had been made popular earlier in the century by the Dutch Italianate painter, Pieter van Laer. Berchem’s travellers are more elegant than those depicted by his predecessor, however. The vertical composition, formed by the high surrounding walls combined with the strong, slanting light, would influence the work of Berchem’s cousin Karel du Jardin, author of P222 and P641.

Berchem was greatly esteemed in his lifetime and throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, particularly in France. This painting passed through several notable French collections, including that of Charles-Ferdinand, duc de Berry, before it was acquired by the 4th Marquess of Hertford in 1867.
