  • Formerly attributed to Du Jardin (q.v.), this picture is a typical work by Sweerts, painted during his Roman period. It displays Sweerts’s characteristically atmospheric use of light and shade, while the physical presence of the sitter and typical mood of uneasy quietude lend the work a monumental character belying its small scale. The sitter may be the Amsterdam merchant and collector Jean Deutz (1618-73) who had a business relationship with Sweerts from at least 1648.
