- The figures wear mid-eighteenth century costume. Probably painted in 1862 and then enlarged to its present size (with additions on four sides) in 1863, at the request of the painting’s first owner, the duc de Morny, Napoleon III’s half-brother. The subject derives from seventeenth-century Dutch painting.
