  • Inspired partly by his admiration for Decamps and Delacroix, Diaz exhibited several Oriental scenes in the late 1840s (when this picture was probably painted), though he never visited the Middle East. As first suggested by the historian Michael Levey, Diaz may have consulted Antoine-Ignace Melling’s 'Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore' (Paris, 1805-19), although the composition of this painting is not taken directly from an illustration in Melling’s book.
