  • The Parable of the Prodigal Son tells of a younger son who squandered his inheritance and was reduced to penury. He returned to his father, wishing to become one of his servants, but his father welcomed and forgave him (Luke XV, 11-24). This is a characteristic example of Scheffer's sentimental religious scenes which won him much popular renown (and some critical opprobrium) during his lifetime.
