  • Orford is on the River Ore, Suffolk, about fifteen miles east of Ipswich. One mile to the north is the village of Sudbourne where the Hertford family were Lords of the Manor until 1874 when their estate was bought by Sir Richard Wallace from the 5th Marquess of Hertford. (It was sold again in 1884.) Stanfield visited Suffolk in 1833 to make drawings for illustrations to an edition of the works of the poet George Crabbe. A related watercolour by Stanfield was sold at Sotheby’s, London, 10 July 1986.
