  • The painting is a typical example of Greuze's later production of 'expressive' and somewhat erotic heads that were produced in increasing numbers in his workshop from the time of the Revolution. The work was exhibited by Greuze at the Salon of 1800 and sold by him in 1802 to Jos. Wilkinson for 4,800 livres. The English landscape painter John Constable copied it in 1831 (private collection). Greuze painted the composition while Constance Mayer was in his studio who is known to have produced a version of it.
