  • The 'Dead Mouse' is typical is typical for Boilly's work from the mid-1790s. It demonstrates his fine technique reminiscent of the then fashionable Dutch seventeenth-century Fijnschilders (cf. Dou and Willem van Mieris). The strong narritive element in the genre scene is also taken from Dutch seventeenth-century models. The picture relates to another work by the artist, called 'L’optique', which was shown at the Salon of 1793, and the mother and little boy recur in other works of the period by the artist.
