  • Venus, goddess of love and beauty, was born from the foam of the sea, and rode on a scallop shell to Paphos, where she was received by the Seasons and taken to join the gods. Charlier’s gouache is painted after a composition by Boucher known from an oil sketch in the Detroit Institute of Arts which is typical for Charlier's relationship to Boucher's work.
