  • Copied from one of the series of twelve views of the Grand Canal painted by Canaletto c. 1728 – c. 1734 for Consul Smith, engraved by Visentini in 1735, and sold by Smith to George III c. 1762 (Royal Collection). This appears to have been copied from the picture rather than from Visentini’s plate, as the colours are closely imitated, and so was probably painted before the original left Italy (cf.
