  • The view shows the façade of Northumberland House as reconstructed in 1752, with the Strand in the mid-distance and Le Sueur’s equestrian statue of Charles I on the right. It is a copy after a picture by Canaletto (Northumberland, Alnwick Castle) which was engraved by Thomas Bowles in 1753, and of which numerous versions are known. Northumberland House was demolished to make way for Northumberland Avenue in 1874, the year after Sir Richard Wallace purchased the present picture.
