  • Edward VI (1537-53) was the son of Jane Seymour, third wife of Henry VIII. The picture, with its partner P554, was probably copied after the engravings illustrated in John Chamberlaine’s Imitations of Original Drawings by Hans Holbein, in the Collection of His Majesty, for the Portraits of Illustrious Persons of the Court of Henry VIII (1792-1800). Over eighty portrait drawings of English sitters by Holbein survive, mostly in the Royal Collection, Windsor Castle, although the drawing of Edward VI (1537-53) engraved by Chamberlaine is no longer accepted as an original by Holbein.
