  • This painting was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1844 under the title 'Voyage dans le désert'. Vernet was famous for his superb memory and his ability to dispense with preparatory sketches. It has long been supposed that this painting was the work which Vernet referred to as the ‘little picture of our caravan in the desert’ which, as he told his wife, he painted during his second visit to Russia. In 2016, Michèle Hannoosh convincingly identified the men as Vernet himself, his cousin Charles Burton and his nephew Frédéric Goupil-Fesquet.
