  • Andries Both was the brother of the painter Jan Both, whose work may also be seen in the Wallace Collection (P28 and P198). Andries Both was associated with the ‘bamboccianti’, the followers of Pieter van Laer, who lived in Rome and specialised in low-life genre scenes. Andries worked primarily in Rome and focused on urban scenes, in stark contrast to his brother’s idyllic landscape paintings. The Strolling Ballad Singers was previously attributed to Karel Du Jardin.
