  • This is a characteristic early 19th-century European scene evoking what was regarded as the sensuality and exoticism of the East. Odalisques of the kind shown in this watercolour became popular subjects in French painting in the 1820s, depicted by, among others, Delacroix, Boulanger and Bonington. This watercolour, a fine example of Decamps's use of bodycolour and varnish to produce rich and colourful effects, is dated c.1830 by Mosby.
